Go to sleep, baby,
Mama will sing.
Of blue butterflies, and dragonfly wings.
Moonlight and sunbeams, raiments so fine.
Silver and gold, for baby of mine.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep.
I sleep right in the center groove
My human being can hardly move!
I've trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"
I sneak up slowly to begin
my nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth-
I'm a puppy, don't you see?
For the morning's here
and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thanks for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs and holds me tight
And shares her bed with me at night!

Staying up all night is a waste of sleeping,
and a waste of sleeping is a waste of dreaming,
and dreaming is important because the more dreams you have,
the better chance you have of one coming true.

He's the only guy I go against that makes me go to bed before midnight.

One by one the flowers close,
Lily and dewy rose
Shutting their tender petals from the moon.

• You make your bed in the morning. At times in the past, people really made their beds -- and at night they stuffed straw into a sack, making a bed to lie on.
• Nightclothes were first worn in the 1500s. Before that, people slept in their day clothes, their underwear, or nothing at all.
• In Ancient Rome, bedrooms were small. A servant guarded the doorway by sleeping across it.
Learn these facts and more in this true but funny account as Newbery Honor Patricia Lauber and celebrated illustrator John Manders go under the covers to explore beds, bedrooms, and pajamas since the Stone Age.
They'll show you how the world's been sleeping since the dawn of time.
